The Case For Student Loans

Student loans are not beloved. Colleges and universities have been criticized for encumbering graduates with payments that can last for decades or, in the event of default, damage credit ratings for life. In recent years several prominent schools even instituted “no loan” policies, promising to assist students with funds from other sources, including their endowments.

But the recent decision by two of those colleges–Dartmouth and Williams–to restore student loans to financial aid packages has reopened the debate about student indebtedness at graduation, and forced educators to take another look at why student loans matter.
